Filling and Flooding Compounds

In the early 1990’s our company was approached by development Engineers at Bell Laboratories to work with them to produce cable filling and flooding compounds for the “new” fiberoptic cable industry. Because our location is within 3 miles of their development center, we joined forces to create, upgrade and later produce these products for the growing telecommunications industry and its expansion into fiberoptic cables. We were then granted a patent for an initial product design for our Mastergel line of products. Some of these Mastergels have been produced commercially for nearly 30 years. Dozens of variations have been created to accommodate the wide variety of cable designs that have emerged and continue to evolve within the fiberoptic cable industry.

As the industry continues to expand, MasterChem has been an integral part of the evolution of filling and flooding compounds for essentially any type of cable in this critical infrastructure market. We work with all segments of the industry to create new designs and are always willing to support new objectives requiring the modification of existing designs.

The large number of Mastergel designs and its multiple variations are too great to include here. Below is a sample of some of the more commonly used products. These present a general overview of the breadth of our capabilities. Although you and your company may be interested in such “off the shelf” designs, we remind you that we are able to optimize these products to match your cable type, equipment speed, ambient conditions, packaging requirements or any other special need that you may have.

Product Description:

  • R-1795
A medium viscosity Mastergel used both as a filling or a flooding compound generally in the production of fiber-optic cable to protect against attenuation from water ingress and compression. This Mastergel contains high purity synthetic hydrocarbon polymers exclusively as a gel base to provide maximum compatibility with all cable components. It has been used in sub-sea applications. An alternative version, R-1795-HA is formulated for added protection with a hydrogen absorption compounds.
  • R-1801
A higher viscosity cable filling compound. R-1801 is generally, but not necessarily, used in the production of Ribbon Cable or “Long Haul” Loose Tube.
  • R-1806-LT
A medium viscosity fiber optic cable filling compound used in dozens of applications around the world with multiple cable designs. Because it is suitable for use with all varieties of cable casing materials, it is often used as a filling compound in polypropylene cables. However, it is often used by cable manufacturers preferring a single filling compound in a variety of casing materials.
  • R-1830
A relatively higher fiberoptic cable filling compound suitable for use with all types of cable casing products, including polypropylene (PE) and polybutylene terephthalate (PBT).
  • R-1843
A low-to-medium fiberoptic filling compound with a uniquely designed rheology and to allow use with all types of fiberoptic cable designs. This product is generally used with equipment operating at high speeds.
  • R-1849
A medium viscosity fiberoptic cable filling compound used at multiple locations typically in the production of Polypropylene cables, although it is suitable for PBT cables as well.
  • R-1871
A medium viscosity filling of flooding compound generally used in the production of copper (twister pairs) telecommunications cable.
  • R-1881
A relatively low viscosity cable filling compound often used in the high speed production of tightly packed optical fiber cables and “Drop Cable” designs.
  • R-1885
A medium viscosity Mastergel used both as a filling compound or a flooding compound in multiple fiber optic cable designs.
  • HT-192
A high temperature resistant gel designed specifically for use in down shaft applications.
  • CC-150
A high density, flame retardant cable compound. It is a synthetic elastomer formulated with specially selected flame-proofing chemicals and minerals. CC-150 is designed to meet multiple Mil-Spec requirements for use with power cable and telecommunications cables as required in naval/ship-board construction.
  • LUBE OIL T-4
A pre-wetting filling compound used in applications requiring smoother or faster extrusion speeds in the production of fiberoptic cable
  • MASTER-LITE LD-35
A very low density, high viscosity, filling/flooding compound designed to allow its use for demanding applications, such as vertical installations, for which traditional protective gels are not suitable.
  • MASTER-LITE LD-45
Very similar to LD-35 except it is typically used as a filling compound. It has a medium to high viscosity range and is only half the density of a typical fiberoptic gel.
  • MA-145
One of many hot melt blends designed for use as a flooding compound for telecommunications, power and sub-sea applications.
